The Issei Pioneers: Hawaii and the Mainland, 1885-1924 catalogue accompanies the Japanese American National Museum's inaugural exhibit which focuses on the early immigration and settlement years of the Issei, the first generation of Japanese immigrants in the United States. The catalogue examines the world of the Issei by using the artifacts that appear in the exhibit to tell the story of the courageous "Issei Pioneers" who left their homeland to settle in a new country. The Japanese American National Museum, located in the heart of Los Angeles' Little Tokyo, is the first museum in the United States expressly dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Through building a comprehensive collection of Japanese American material culture and through a multi-faceted program of exhibitions, educational programs, films, and publications, the Museum tells the history of Japanese Americans to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
